Bud Rot in Cannabis: What It Looks Like, What Causes It, and How to Stop It

Bud rot starts inside your densest buds long before you can see it. Visible mold can take 33 to 41 days to show up after the fungus first takes hold, over a month of feeding before there's anything to see from the outside (Buirs, Lung & Punja, 2025). Here's what actually causes it, the early warning sign most growers miss, and what to do the moment you find it.

What Bud Rot Actually Is

Bud rot is caused by Botrytis cinerea, a gray mold fungus whose spores are essentially everywhere in the environment already. Under the right conditions, those spores germinate on plant tissue and grow inward through the core of a dense bud before working their way back out. Infected bud isn't worth smoking. Mold exposure isn't something to gamble on, especially if you have allergies or a respiratory condition.

What Bud Rot Looks Like (And What It Isn't)

The Early Warning Sign

The first visible clue is usually a single fan leaf or sugar leaf dying or yellowing right where it emerges from a bud, with no obvious explanation. That leaf isn't dying on its own. The fungus has already grown inside the bud core and cut off that leaf's water supply.

The Real Cause (And Why "Keep Humidity Under 50%" Isn't the Whole Story)

Most grow advice says to keep flower-room humidity under 50%. That's a reasonable target, but it's not actually the number that triggers bud rot. Peer-reviewed cannabis research puts the real threshold higher: Botrytis cinerea reliably establishes in cannabis buds above 70% relative humidity combined with cool temperatures in the 17 to 24°C (62 to 75°F) range (Mahmoud & Punja, 2023, Botany). That's notably lower than general Botrytis literature outside cannabis, which usually cites above 90% RH, because dense cannabis colas trap moisture in their interior and create a microclimate that measures meaningfully warmer and more humid than whatever your room sensor reads (Buirs, Lung & Punja, 2025).

That's the part that catches growers off guard. Your room can read a perfectly reasonable 55% on the wall sensor while the core of a dense, unventilated cola sits meaningfully higher. Researchers have measured that gap directly (Buirs, Lung & Punja, 2025). What hasn't been published is exactly how wide it gets, which is part of why a room reading alone isn't a safe all-clear. The room number and the bud number aren't the same number.

Why Late Flower Is When It Hits Hardest

Bud rot risk climbs as your buds fill out. Two independent studies converge on the same window: Mahmoud & Punja found peak susceptibility across flower days 14 to 28, and Buirs, Lung & Punja narrowed it to three specific points inside that window, days 14, 21, and 28, right as colas are packing on weight but haven't fully matured. That's also exactly when airflow to the interior of the bud gets worse, since there's more plant material blocking it. Outdoor growers have an extra variable indoor growers don't: risk peaks September through October in North America, when outdoor conditions commonly run around 14 g/m³ absolute humidity at 20 to 22°C, right in the fungus's favor, on top of rain and dew wetting the buds directly late in the season.

How to Stop It Before It Starts

Airflow matters at least as much as the humidity number, and it's the part most growers under-do. Research on greenhouse cannabis found that improved air circulation, paired with biological controls, lowered bud rot incidence (Buirs, Lung & Punja, 2025). A few changes that actually reduce risk:

  • Many growers defoliate around dense colas in late flower to open up airflow to the interior. It's a sensible idea that hasn't been formally tested in cannabis specifically, but it costs nothing to try on your densest plants
  • Point a fan at canopy level, not just an exhaust fan pulling from the top of the tent
  • Target ambient RH in the 40 to 50% range in flower, understanding that's a safety margin below the actual 70% threshold, not the threshold itself
  • Avoid overhead watering or foliar spraying buds once they're dense. Water gets in easily and doesn't leave
  • Give extra-dense-flowering varieties more space between plants than you'd give an airier one. Incidence has been measured anywhere from 1% to 13% depending on cultivar, real evidence that strain choice is a genuine lever here, not just a footnote (Buirs, Lung & Punja, 2025)

What to Do If You Find It

Cut several inches below the visibly infected tissue, not just the moldy part. Botrytis grows through tissue before it's visible, so what looks clean right at the edge of the damage often isn't. Bag the infected material and throw it out. Don't compost it, that just gives the spores somewhere new to spread from. Check every other bud on the plant and the plants next to it. If it's spreading fast in humid conditions, harvesting early can save more than waiting does.

And the one that matters most: don't smoke infected bud. That's not a situation you trim around and move on from.

The Short Version

Bud rot isn't really a humidity problem. It's an airflow problem that humidity makes worse. Keep air moving through your canopy, know that your bud cores run hotter and wetter than your room sensor, and catch the early warning sign, a single dying leaf with no explanation, before it becomes something you can see from across the room.
