Grower Glossary – OUpdated 8 days ago
O
“O” stands for organics, oxygen, and osmosis — the biological balance every grow needs. This glossary section explains how organic systems and oxygen flow drive root vitality and nutrient efficiency.
Obligate Aerobe
A microbe that can only survive in oxygen-rich environments.
Grower Slang: “O₂ bug.”
Essential for aerobic composting and living soil health.
Obligate Anaerobe
A microorganism that thrives only in oxygen-free environments.
Grower Slang: “Anaerobe.”
Can cause root rot or foul smells in overwatered systems — keep root zones oxygenated.
Occlusion
A blockage in plant tissue or vascular flow caused by salt buildup or disease.
Grower Slang: “Nute block.”
Cronk Tip: Regular flushing prevents occlusions in coco and hydro grows.
Off-Gassing
The release of chemical vapors from plastics, paints, or adhesives.
Grower Slang: “Room fumes.”
Always use non-toxic materials in grow rooms — VOCs can stress plants and affect terpene quality.
Off-Pheno (Grower Slang)
A phenotype that doesn’t match desired traits (yield, aroma, structure).
Grower Slang: “Oddball,” “wild pheno.”
May still produce unique terpenes — some off-phenos become future breeders.
OG (Original Gangster / Ocean Grown)
A legendary cannabis lineage known for dense buds and gassy aroma.
Grower Slang: “OG,” “OG Kush,” “Ocean Grown.”
Cronk Tip: OG varieties love cooler temps and steady EC around 1.8–2.0 in bloom.
Oil
A concentrated cannabis extract rich in cannabinoids and terpenes.
Grower Slang: “Dab oil,” “hash oil.”
Made through solvent or solventless extraction processes.
Oligotrophic Soil
Soil with low nutrient levels and minimal organic matter.
Grower Slang: “Poor soil.”
Boost fertility with compost, amendments, and PuurOrganics nutrients.
One-Hitter
A small smoking pipe designed for single inhalations.
Grower Slang: “Bat,” “dugout.”
Often used for sampling flower potency or testing new harvests.
Open Pollination
Allowing plants to reproduce naturally without controlled breeding.
Grower Slang: “Open breed,” “wild pollination.”
Produces diverse genetic variation but less consistency.
Organic Growing
Cultivating plants using natural inputs (compost, microbes, minerals) instead of synthetic fertilizers.
Grower Slang: “Organic,” “living grow.”
Cronk Tip: Use PuurOrganics Line for clean, sustainable feeding that supports soil life and long-term fertility.
Organic Matter (OM)
Decomposed plant and animal material in soil that feeds microbes and improves structure.
Grower Slang: “Compost base.”
Cronk Tip: High OM = better water retention and nutrient buffering.
Organic Nutrients
Plant nutrients derived from natural, carbon-based sources.
Grower Slang: “Organics,” “natural feed.”
Cronk Tip: PuurOrganics is 100% plant-based and upcycled for clean, sustainable performance.
Osmosis
The movement of water across root membranes from low to high solute concentration.
Grower Slang: “Water pull.”
Drives nutrient absorption — proper EC balance keeps osmotic flow healthy.
Osmotic Pressure
The force created by osmosis that moves water into plant roots.
Grower Slang: “Root pressure.”
Too high EC increases osmotic pressure, leading to dehydration or nutrient lock.
Overfeeding
Providing more nutrients than plants can absorb.
Grower Slang: “Hot mix,” “too strong.”
Cronk Tip: Watch EC levels — flush and rebalance if tips burn or leaves darken.
Overwatering
Giving too much water, suffocating roots and encouraging anaerobic microbes.
Grower Slang: “Drowned roots,” “too wet.”
Cronk Tip: Let pots dry 50–70% before watering again; use fabric pots for better airflow.
Oxidation
The loss of electrons during chemical reactions — often seen as browning or degradation in nutrients or trichomes.
Grower Slang: “Breakdown.”
Store nutrients in cool, dark conditions to prevent oxidation.
Oxygenation
Supplying oxygen to the root zone, often through air stones or well-drained media.
Grower Slang: “O₂ flow.”
Cronk Tip: Essential in hydro and coco — roots love oxygen as much as water.
Oxidative Stress
Damage caused by excessive light, heat, or oxygen radicals inside plant cells.
Grower Slang: “Plant stress.”
Balanced light intensity and micronutrient support help prevent this.
Ozone (O₃)
A molecule used for sterilization and odor control in grow rooms.
Grower Slang: “O₃,” “ozone cleaner.”
Use carefully — too much ozone can harm plants and humans.
Offcut (Cloning Slang)
A clone or cutting taken from a less desirable branch or plant.
Grower Slang: “Scrap cut.”
Often used for testing nutrients or training before working with main genetics.
Outcross
Breeding between unrelated strains to introduce new traits or vigor.
Grower Slang: “Crossbreed,” “hybrid cross.”
Used to improve structure, yield, or resistance.
Outgassing (Environmental Term)
Similar to off-gassing, but can also refer to the natural emission of CO₂ from soil and microbes.
Grower Slang: “Soil breath.”
Healthy living soil “outgasses” CO₂ as microbes decompose organics.
Outdoor Grow
Cultivation under natural sunlight and open-air conditions.
Grower Slang: “Outdoor,” “sun grow.”
Cronk Tip: Use PuurOrganics for sustainable outdoor runs and richer soil ecology.
Out-of-Phase Lighting
When lights turn on/off asynchronously, often due to timer error.
Grower Slang: “Timer drift.”
Can stress photoperiod plants — double-check timers after power outages.
Overcooked (Slang)
Grower slang for over-mature buds or over-dried harvests.
Grower Slang: “Crispy,” “overdone.”
Leads to harsh smoke and terpene loss — dry slow, cure cool.
Overdrying
Removing too much moisture during curing or drying.
Grower Slang: “Crisped buds.”
Target 10–12% moisture for perfect burn and smooth flavor.
Overflow
Runoff from overwatering or excess nutrient solution.
Grower Slang: “Spill.”
Indicates poor drainage or irrigation calibration.
Overlap (Lighting Term)
The zone where multiple light footprints intersect, increasing total intensity.
Grower Slang: “Hot overlap.”
Adjust fixtures to maintain even PPFD across canopy.
Oxidizer
A compound that promotes oxidation (like hydrogen peroxide).
Grower Slang: “Sterilizer.”
Used in cleaning reservoirs or sterilizing hydro systems.
Organic Residue
Leftover organic material from feeds or decomposed matter.
